I love instrumental pop music - especially from the late 1950s and early 1960s.
My favourite group is The Shadows and I can still remember the thrill of hearing Hank Marvin's guitar when I bought 'Apache'. I've got most of The Shadows' recordings and have seen them in concert many times.
I also like The Ventures' hit 'Walk Don't Run'.
But there was one particular instrumental that actually brought tears to my eyes the first time I really listened to it. It was Joe Meek's classic composition 'Telstar' by The Tornados. It began just fine and I thought it was very catchy - but once that soaring chorus hit me I was overwhelmed. The record belonged to a neighbour so it was some time before I got my own copy. I saved up the money and it was mine at last - the first LP I bought. Now I have the definitive Tornados music on CD - but there's nothing quite like listening to 'Telstar' on vinyl!
